Project Context
Abbott, a leading health technology company, requested the creation of an application to enhance the experience of attendees during an international conference. The platform needed to include features such as user interaction, gamified challenges, and a space to share photos and impressions of the event, promoting a unique and engaging experience.
My Role
As a senior UX/UI designer, I was responsible for leading the design from initial research to high-fidelity prototype development, including:
Initial Research: Understanding the expectations of attendees and client objectives through provided documentation analysis.
Conceptualisation and Functional Design: Mapping key flows and defining the information architecture.
Interface Design: Creating high-fidelity wireframes and interactive prototypes that reflect the expected experience.
Design and Development Process
1. Initial Research
The project began with a thorough review of the documentation provided by Abbott. The analysis focused on:
Identification of Key Objectives:
Increasing attendee engagement during the conference.
Encouraging interaction among participants through challenges, rankings and a group chat.
User Analysis:
Conference attendees with varied profiles (researchers, doctors, students).
Expectations: an easy-to-use, intuitive app focused on social and professional interaction.
Need Definition:
Simple and accessible interface for users of different ages and technological levels.
Dynamic features like challenges and a ranking system.
2. Conceptualisation and Definition
Based on initial findings, I structured the application to ensure an intuitive and entertaining experience:
Information Architecture:
Creation of clear sections: registration, profile, challenges, ranking, and a space to share photos.
User Flows:
Designed flows for main functionalities:
Registration of new users.
Navigation in the ranking and participation in challenges.
Uploading photos and using the group chat.
Flow Example:
The user receives a notification of a new challenge > Opens the challenges section > Completes the challenge > Uploads their progress to gain points in the ranking.
Definition of Key Features:
Registration and profile creation with customised fields.
Gamification system (challenges, ranking).
Multimedia space for sharing photos and impressions.
3. Interface Design and Prototyping
After validating the flows, I began visual design and the development of interactive prototypes:
High-Fidelity Wireframes:
Designed detailed screens that included:
Home Screen: Welcome message and quick access to main sections.
User Profile: Personal information and editing options.
Challenges and Ranking: Gamified design with clear points visualisation.
Multimedia Space: Integration of photo galleries with upload and comment options.
Visual Design:
Used vibrant colours and modern typography to reflect the dynamic character of the event.
Incorporated customised icons to facilitate navigation.
Interactive Prototype:
In Figma, created a functional prototype simulating complete flows, such as:
User registration and profile setup.
Participation in challenges with visual confirmation upon completing tasks.
Interaction in the group chat and real-time ranking exploration.
4. Internal Validation and Feedback
Before finalising the design, I conducted internal tests to ensure functionality:
Internal Testing:
Validated the clarity of flows and interface accessibility with a representative group of users.
Iterations Based on Feedback:
Adjusted visual elements, such as button size and colour contrast, to improve usability.
Simplified the photo upload flow to reduce unnecessary steps.
Current Status and Next Steps
The design has been approved and is in the development phase. The upcoming stages include:
Real User Testing: Validate the application in a test environment with conference attendees.
Official Launch: Implement final adjustments and launch the application for the event.
Expected Outcomes
Increased Engagement: Gamification and interaction features are expected to significantly boost attendee engagement.
Personalised Experience: Users will enjoy a space tailored to their needs, fostering connections among participants.
Event Optimisation: The application will allow Abbott to collect data and measure the impact of activities in real-time.
